From humble beginnings in 2002, the Oxford Lieder Festival has established itself as the leading celebration of song in the UK. Concerts, masterclasses, talks and workshops are held in Oxford University's Jacqueline du Pré Music Building and Holywell Music Room.
The 2009 festival opens with Mahler, Schumann and Brahms in a recital entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn (from Mahler's early song cycle). The following packed fortnight includes solo recitals by Rhona McKail, Joan Rodgers, Werner Güra and Roderick Williams, a nod to Mendelssohn's 200th birthday, a Ned Rorem UK première, Britten's complete Canticles and Schönberg's Book of the Hanging Gardens.
Schubert's three great song cycles are also included: Winterreise (William Holzmair & Andreas Haefliger), Die schöne Müllerin (Christopher Maltman & Graham Johnson) and, to end, Schwanengesang (James Gilchrist & Anne Tilbrook).
