England's favourite light show takes place every year along Blackpool's six-mile promenade.

The famous Blackpool Illuminations started way back in 1879. From humble beginnings featuring just eight arc lamps, the show now costs £2.5 million to stage and presents colour, light and movement, even breathtaking displays using real fire and water.

The opening evening is a special event when a celebrity has the honour of switching on the lights. Over the years, the task has fallen to the likes of footballing legend Stanley Matthews, Grand National winner Red Rum and Ken Dodd, among many others.
