A popular American pastime is to plant fields with maize, then cut paths to create a maze in the tall crop. The tradition has arrived in England and in late summer you can come and get lost at York Maze!
More than 1.5 million maize plants are used in the maze, which covers 30 acres. It is planted in April, grows to ten feet tall by the end of August and is mown in a different pattern each year. It claims to be the largest maize maze in the world, and is certainly high enough to confuse someone with even the best sense of direction.
At the end of September, the maize is harvested and fed to the farm's Jersey Cows. Their creamy milk is made into delicious ice cream. Getting out of maize mazes can be rather tiring, so replenish your energy with a yummy ice cream from the shop - if you make it out alive!
