York's Castle Museum brings more than 400 years of history back to life in its award-winning exhibitions and displays.
Visitors can wander through cobbled streets, see loads of historic costumes, view the toys that children used to treasure and go shopping "the Victorian way". The three main collections cover military history, costume history and social history of the past 400 years.
The buildings that house these displays have their own history too - they were originally prisons (housing Dick Turpin no less), so visitors also gain insight into the harsh realities of 18th-century prison life.
