York Castle Prison
2 Jan 2010 - 30 Dec 2012
Opening hours: Daily 9.30am-5pm
Cost: £7.50; concessions £6.50; children £4; under 5s free
Part of the York Castle complex, York Castle Prison invites masochistic visitors to spend the day where others spent a lifetime. With York Castle having been a seat of justice for 1,000 years, the attraction explores its unique history.
With part of York Castle still used as a seat of justice today, York Castle Prison admirably evokes an atmosphere of gravitas and difficult times past for all those who visit.
Weaving through the cramped cells and claustrophobic surrounds of the old prison's narrow chambers, visitors are invited to learn about the misdeeds performed by those unlucky enough to be incarcerated there, as well as the severe fates their acts condemned them to.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Recorders
18 Sep 2010 - 18 Jun 2013; not Mon
Pioneering artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer uses highly sophisticated responsive technologies such as robotics, video projection, and sound to sense the actions of nearby people. This installation at Manchester Art Gallery allows visitors to leave a trace of themselves in his art.
Lozano-Hemmer's spectacular artworks have broken the mould in the art world, harnessing the power of new media to create innovative, interactive pieces that are shaped and sculptured by those who view them.
Bringing his Recorders exhibition to the UK for the first time, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer allows spectators to leave their imprint on art, as the display reacts to, and records, visitors' movements, voices and even pulses.

Tolling the Devil's Knell
24 Dec 2011 - 25 Dec 2012 (annual)
Opening hours: The last bell tolls at midnight
Every Christmas Eve the bell of Dewsbury parish church is tolled once for each year of the Christian era, to remind the devil of his defeat. Now with over 2000 tolls each year it's a cacophonous local call for Christmas cheer.
This medieval tradition has a three-fold function in that the tolling keeps the devil away, evokes his defeat at the birth of Jesus Christ and reminds people of their salvation from the Devil through Jesus.
Legend has it that the bell was donated long ago by a local murderer, one Tom of Soothill, to atone for his crimes. The bell, named after him, goes under the nickname of "Black Tom Soothill".
