With its beautiful location at the head of Loch Fyne, the Inveraray Highland Games in the grounds of Inveraray Castle are particularly noted as the "friendly games."
Opened by the Duke of Argyll, they play host to the usual mix of track and "heavy" events, for the sports-minded, and both Scottish dancing and bagpiping (solo and team) for those with a more artistic bent.
The promise of prize money helps those with a competitive streak and the one-day event showcases all the traditional Highland Games, harking back to the warrior clan days. The popular "heavy" events - the shot putt, hammer throwing and caber tossing - feature large men in tartan sweating profusely as they hurl large objects as far as they can. Wrestling and cycle races are also included.
