Nestled in the heart of the historic Old Town, the Grassmarket area is one of the most historic, vibrant and popular parts of Edinburgh.

Made up of the Grassmarket itself and a collection of cobbled streets that feed into it, the area boasts spectacular medieval architecture and an eclectic and distinctive range of shops, galleries, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Once the site of the City's Gallows, where the notorious tales of the body snatchers Burke and Hare and "half-hingit" Maggie originated, the Grassmarket also holds the key to many of Edinburgh's darkest and most intriguing secrets. You only have to visit some of the taverns which have been here since the 1500s to learn more about the city's darker side...
