What's on in Bath

Mid-Somerset Competitive Festival

14 - 28 Mar 2009 (annual)

Venues throughout Bath host the Mid-Somerset Competitive Festival of speech, drama, creative writing and music classes. Aimed at participants from six years old to adults, it is open to amateurs only and adjudicated by professionals.

During the first week of Bath's Mid-Somerset Competitive Festival there are a range of speech and drama classes, ending with a grand concert and presentation of trophies. Entries for the Creative Writing classes are submitted prior to the festival, and entrants present their work to each other on the first Saturday. Many of the winning entries are published in the local newspaper.

The Mid-Somerset Competitive Festival's Music Week comprises a full eight days of classes, with something for all ages, abilities and instruments. There are numerous awards, including the Thelma King Instrumental Award, which offers a place on a week-long summer music school. Not all classes carry trophies, since the emphasis is on performance, appraisal and a meaningful musical experience for all.

The advice and encouragement offered by the professionals has inspired many young performers to strive for excellence and achieve a professional career. For a syllabus, programme and details on how to take part, please contact the General Secretary or visit the Mid-Somerset Competitive Festival website.
