An iconic Welsh landmark, Cardiff Castle bursts with history from the Romans to the Normans and beyond. Learn about these extraordinary episodes from the exhibition and film in the Interpretation Centre, before joining a tour of the Castle Apartments.
The castle dates back almost 2000 years to the arrival of the Romans in the first century AD. The keep was built after the Norman Conquest, followed by a number of medieval fortifications and dwellings. By the 18th century the castle was in the possession of the Bute family.
From 1866 the 3rd Marquess of Bute employed the great architect William Burges to transform the castle's lodgings. Within the gothic towers he created opulent interiors, lavishly decorated with murals, stained glass, marble, gold leaf and wood carvings.
As well as perusing the impressive interiors, visitors can also enjoy a stroll in the castle grounds or refreshments in the tea rooms.
