Much of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to many plant and animal species. Cosmeston Medieval Village, within the park, is a unique Heritage Project that takes visitors back to the 14th century.
The reconstructed 14th-century Cosmeston Medieval Village is on its original site, and includes medieval buildings, gardens, rare breeds and a small museum. Costumed "villagers" provide guided tours and throughout the year there's jousting, medieval combat, archery, crafts, Halloween events and summer festivals.
Cosmeston Lakes Country Park itself consists of landscaped former quarry areas, woodland, calcareous grassland and wetlands, a rural retreat just a short bus ride from Cardiff.
